Muzej narodne osvoboditve Maribor je začel delovati kot samostojna muzejska ustanova 1. maja 1958. Njegovi zametki pa segajo že v leto 1947, ko je bila v Pokrajinskem muzeju v Mariboru odprta zbirka o narodnoosvobodilnem boju. To je bila prva tovrstna zbirka v slovenskih kompleksnih muzejih. Vsebinski koncept muzeja je bil natančno opredeljen ob njegovi ustanovitvi. Gre za zgodovinski muzej, ki se ukvarja z muzeološko in historiografsko obravnavo novejše zgodovine severovzhodne Slovenije.
Muzej ima svoje prostore v meščanski vili na vogalu Mladinske ulice in Ulice heroja Tomšiča, ki jo je sredi devetdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja dal zgraditi mariborski podjetnik Scherbaum.
Danes je poleg zanimivih in bogatih muzejskih zbirk, ki štejejo že 170.000 muzealij, zelo bogata tudi muzejska fototeka. Posebnost muzeja je arhiv z več kot 120 tekočimi metri gradiva okupatorjevega in partizanskega izvora. Muzej pridobiva gradivo z odkupi in donacijami. Muzej narodne osvoboditve Maribor je bil tudi prvi v Sloveniji, ki je uvedel delovno mesto kustosa pedagoga. Muzejska pedagoška služba je tudi danes s svojimi raznovrstnimi oblikami dela z obiskovalci eden od stebrov muzejske dejavnosti, saj s svojo pestro paleto dejavnosti privlači v muzej vsako leto veliko obiskovalcev. The National Liberation Museum began operating as an independent museum institute on 1st May 1958. Its origins date back to the year 1947, when a collection on the fight for national liberation was opened in the Regional Museum in Maribor. This was the first collection of its kind in a complex Slovene museum. On its foundation the concept of the content of the museum was precisely defined. It is a historical museum, which deals with the museological and historiographical treatment of modern history of northeastern Slovenia.
The museum is housed in a bourgeois villa on the corner of the streets Mladinska ulica and Ulica heroja Tomšiča, which was built by the Maribor entrepreneur Karel Scherbaum in the middle of the 1890s.
Today, along with interesting and rich museum collections, which already amount to more than 170.000 museum artefacts, there is a very opulent museum photo-library. A speciality of the museum is its archive, which has more than 120 running metres of material from occupying enemy and Partisan sources. The museum acquires material from purchases and donations. The National Liberation Museum Maribor was also the first museum in Slovenia to introduce the post of curator educator. With its diverse forms of work with visitors the work of the museum educator is still today one of the pillars of museum activities, as with its wide palette of activities attract a large number of visitors to the museum every year.
